THE HURT LOCKER

BAFTA/OSCAR WINNER - BEST FILM/ BEST DIRECTOR
"The Hurt Locker" is a riveting, suspenseful portrait of the courage under fire of the military's unrecognized heroes: the technicians of a bomb squad who volunteer to challenge the odds and save lives in one of the world's most dangerous places. Three members of the Army's elite Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad battle insurgents and each other as they search for and disarm a wave of roadside bombs on the streets of Baghdad-in order to try and make the city a safer place for Iraqis and Americans alike. Their mission is clear-protect and save-but it's anything but easy, as the margin of error when defusing a war-zone bomb is zero. This thrilling and heart-pounding look at the effects of combat and danger on the human psyche is based on the first-hand observations of journalist and screenwriter Mark Boal, who was embedded with a special bomb unit in Iraq. These men spoke of explosions as putting you in "the hurt locker."

INVICTUS

From director Clint Eastwood, “Invictus” tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team, Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon), to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.

LA RONDINE (PUCCINI)

ONE NIGHT ONLY TUESDAY MARCH 9TH AT 7PM TICKETS AVAILABLE 10.00
RECORDED LIVE AT THE TEATRO LA FENICE
In 1913, the directors of Vienna’s Karlstheater commissioned Puccini to compose a Viennese opera. By the time he finished the La Rondine, intended to be a more organic and entertaining version of the already popular “comic opera,” it was 1917 and World War I had broken out. As a result, the production debuted in Monte Carlo instead of Vienna.
Although it was not one of Puccini’s most celebrated pieces, this light-hearted and charming opera has become increasingly popular in the last few years with productions at the Met, the San Francisco Opera and, of course, Venice's famed opera house, La Fenice.
Filmed live during the January 2008 premiere, the production, directed by Graham Vick, features an outstanding international cast conducted by Carlo Rizzi.
The Fenice production was given a rousing review on Opera Chic, which noted: "Act I [was] commedia brillante, a sophisticated comedy from Hollywood's golden era that could have been made by Gregory La Cava or Jean Negulesco...Act II [was] a funny send-up -- with Jayne Mansfield look-alike super vixens, hawt sailors and giant Moulin Rouge pinup girls... and Act III [was] a minimalist, abstract beach...Vick adds a final scene -- Casablanca in reverse – giving depth to a truly problematic libretto. Fiorenza Cedolins [played] Magda with a strong dramatic presence, good looks and undeniable charisma."

A SINGLE MAN

BAFTA WINNER- BEST ACTOR COLIN FIRTH
A SINGLE MAN is based on the novel of the same name by Christopher Isherwood. Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, it is the story of a British college professor (Colin Firth) who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner. The story is a romantic tale of love interrupted, the isolation that is an inherent part of the human condition, and ultimately the importance of the seemingly smaller moments in life.

THE LAST STATION

After almost fifty years of marriage, the Countess Sofya, Leo Tolstoy’s devoted wife, passionate lover, muse and secretary—she’s copied out War and Peace six times…by hand—suddenly finds her entire world turned upside down. In the name of his newly created religion, the great Russian novelist has renounced his noble title, his property and even his family in favor of poverty, vegetarianism and even celibacy. After she’s born him thirteen children! When Sofya then discovers that Tolstoy’s trusted disciple, Chertkov —whom she despises—may have secretly convinced her husband to sign a new will, leaving the rights to his iconic novels to the Russian people rather than his very own family, she is consumed by righteous outrage. This is the last straw. Using every bit of cunning, every trick of seduction in her considerable arsenal, she fights fiercely for what she believes is rightfully hers.
